Lesson Title
Symbolic Self-Portrait in Photoshop
Lesson Summary
Students draw four symbols that represent them using graphite. After the four symbols are drawn, they are scanned into the computer using Photoshop. Using select clone tools, brushes and opacity, students create a new composition that unites the symbols together and creates a terrific design in both grayscale and color. The final composition is printed out twice, and one is left in grayscale, and the other is colored in by hand using Prismacolor blendable color pencils. Each of the steps in this project is such a beautiful work of art, they could stand alone. The process teaches students to use scanner, resolution, cropping tools, composition, these principles of design: unity, balance, movement, contrast, and these elements of art: color, gradation, and blending while learning new techniques in Photoshop.
Objective(s) 1. Create four symbols that represent you in an abstract design that may or may not include text., 2. Use new tools in Photoshop to create a new work of art from one that is hand drawn, then scanned into the computer., 3. Create a unified composition that has balance, contrast, and movement, color gradations and blending., 4. Type into the computer an artist statement about oneself that descirbes how the four symbols represent the artist and self expression in picture and written form.
