Chinese brush painting and Shadow puppets

Using the story book 'Malian and the Magic Brush', students will learn the elements of art through the illustration and teacher's explanation. Teacher will project Chinese Shadow puppet shows via the projector go to

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zq4fVPPvhD8 for a traditional Chinese puppet show. Once students read the story, they work in groups to paint sceneries from the story. Students then use permanent markers to draw characters on transparencies, cut out the images, and then glue a stick (disposable chopsticks will work) to the transparency puppets. Teacher shines a lamp onto a low threadcount white bed sheet as students do a puppet show using the scenery and transparency puppets that they created.

Procedures - 1. Introduce the story. Discuss Chinese brush strokes and artwork. Lead into Shadow Puppetry, an art form that has been in place since the beginning of China's history., 2. Teacher researches the internet for the Chinese Shadow Puppetry shows and copy the links. Place the links on students' computers so students can access these links when needed., 3. Teacher shows the Shadow Puppet show and point out the elements of arts in the demonstration. Students work in groups to create sceneries and characters using transparencies. , 4. Teacher and students together view the making of the puppets through video streaming. Students select a scene to do their puppet show.
Assessment Each group will be assessed based on a four point rubric to gauge the understanding of the puppetry, how closely the student-produced shows resemble the fluency of the demo show, and how students access the weblink to view the puppet show when necessary.
