Research Paper

 

Lesson Summary

 

Students will select an author, research through at lest 3-4 different sources, and write a research paper using MLA format.

 

Objective(s)  1. Students will learn how to select a research topic, find and evaluate the sources, prepare and make note cards, organize and develop an outline, document sources, prepare work cited list,and write(draft, revise, and final copy) a research paper according to MLA format. CA standards: reading 2.1, writing: 1.1, 1.3, 1.4, 1.5, 1.6, 1.7, 2.0, 2.3, listening and speaking: 1.3, 1.5, 2.0, 2.2 , 2. Internet research and word processing,
 

 

NETS: 

CREATIVITY AND INNOVATION: demonstrate creative thinking, construct knowledge, and develop innovative products and processes using technology., CREATIVITY AND INNOVATION: create original works as a means of personal or group expression.

COMMUNICATION AND COLLABORATION: use digital media and environments to communicate and work collaboratively, including at a distance, to support individual learning and contribute to the learning of others.

RESEARCH AND INFORMATION FLUENCY: apply digital tools to gather, evaluate, and use information., RESEARCH AND INFORMATION FLUENCY: locate, organize, analyze, evaluate, synthesize, and ethically use information from a variety of sources and media., RESEARCH AND INFORMATION FLUENCY:evaluate and select information sources and digital tools based on the appropriateness to specific tasks.

CRITICAL THINKING, PROBLEM SOLVING AND DECISION MAKING: critical thinking skills to plan and conduct research, manage projects, solve problems, and make informed decisions using appropriate digital tools and resources.

Procedures - 1. Students will select an author from the reading(short story, poems, or novels) to work on the research paper., 2. Library visiting to make students familiar with the different kinds of sources(books, magazines, encyclopedia, online source, etc.)and how to use them. Ask students to prepare 200-30 note cards and then demonstrate and teach the students how to make source cards and take notes( direct quote, paraphrase, or summary)., 3. Teach students how to organize information and develop an outline.(chronological order, logical order, or order of importance) Demonstrate how to document sources: 1). giving credit in the paper, 2). work cited list (MLA format) , 4. write a thesis statement, use word processing to write a rough draft, revise, and final copy. Then present in class.
 

 

Assessment 1. Is the thesis clearly stated? 2. Is each main point well well supported with evidence? 3. Are all sources given proper credit? (MLA) 4. Does the conclusion restate the thesis and give the reader a closing thought? 5. Is it free of grammar, spelling, and punctuation errors. 6. The way of presentation.
