The Odyssey Through Theme and Reflection of African-American Culture from Apple's Learning Interchange

Lesson Summary

This project is designed to allow learners an opportunity to connect with one another while exploring themes from Homer's Odyssey. This exploration is done through the lens of non-fiction text and a focus on African-American culture. This supports the literacy needs of students and allows connections to black culture. The connections are made using blogs to allow students the ability to communicate in a native environment. Youth of the 21st century are very familiar with using this media to share ideas, so the thematic explorations become part of their culture. In addition, it allows connections to be made between different classes, which wouldn't normally occur in a traditional four-wall scenario.
