Students will be connecting the United States Mints, 50 State Quarters® Program with events in American History between 1776 – 1812. This lesson takes about 2 class periods – 45 or 50 minute sessions. Students will be connecting the symbols from the designs of the first 18 quarters to our country’s history. Students will explore the ways these coins reflect the nation’s history, diversity, unity, pride and commitment to maintaining those American ideals.
Objective(s) 1. - 8.1 Students understand the major events preceding the founding of the nation and relate their significance to the development of American constitutional democracy., 2. - 8.2 Students understand the foundation of the American political system and the ways in which citizens participate in it., 3.

Procedures - 1. Review with students the The United States Mint site – www.usmint.gov/kids Review the 50 State Quarters® Program Review vocabulary terms – diversity, pride, identity, history , 2. Divide students into 2-3 student groups – each group will choose 3 different quarters designs from the 1st 18 quarters. Complete the Anticipation Guide #2 that is uploaded to Google Docs , 3. Have students download from Google Docs – “Quarter Designs” Have them review their designs Complete Anticipation Guide #3 and #4 (located in Google Docs) Complete Prediction and Fact Worksheet (located in Google Docs) , 4. Complete Design Reflection – (located in Google Docs) Using an ELMO and LCD projector review the Key Concept Terms and begin creating a Key Concept Map of events using terms.
Assessment Completion of documents and online quiz.
