Lesson Title

Biogeochemical Cycles

Timothy Tucker

9th Grade

Lesson Summary

This project is a presentation providing a chance for in-depth review of California Standard #7: Biogeochemical Cycles. "Each element on Earth moves among reservoirs, which exist in the solid earth, in oceans, in the atmosphere, and within and among organisms as part of biogeochemical cycles."

Objective(s)  1. Students know the carbon cycle of photosynthesis and respiration and the nitrogen cycle., 2. Students know the movement of matter among reservoirs is driven by Earth's internal and external sources of energy.

NETS:

CREATIVITY AND INNOVATION: use models and simulations to explore complex systems and issues.

COMMUNICATION AND COLLABORATION: use digital media and environments to communicate and work collaboratively, including at a distance, to support individual learning and contribute to the learning of others.

RESEARCH AND INFORMATION FLUENCY: locate, organize, analyze, evaluate, synthesize, and ethically use information from a variety of sources and media.

CRITICAL THINKING, PROBLEM SOLVING AND DECISION MAKING:plan and manage activities to develop a solution or complete a project.

DIGITAL CITIZENSHIP: exhibit a positive attitude toward using technology that supports collaboration, learning, and productivity.

TECHNOLOGY OPERATIONS AND CONCEPTS: use models and simulations to explore complex systems and issues.

Technology Tools Google Earth, Wikipedia, Moviemaking Software, Video Streaming

Procedures - 1. Teacher delivers content in the form of a Powerpoint presentation., 2. Test students learning and comprehension. Most students will have difficulties. Teacher must reteach., 3. Assign students the task of presenting one of the following biogeochemical cycles: (1) hydrologic; (2) nitrogen; (3) carbon. , 4. The presentation must be accompanied by a poster or Powerpoint. The presentation will done using computer, multimedia projector and ELMO.

Assessment A rubric is designed for a "Poster Presentation
