Physical Science Periodic Table Project

8th Grade
Lesson Summary
Through the use of technology of your choice, you will prepare an instructional / information presentation of how Elements are organized within the Periodic Table. Discussion regarding physical properties of elements as they relate to each Group of elements will be assessed for accuracy. Overview: This is a research project that will help you become our class experts on the periodic table. As a class expert, you may decide to take one of 3 of the following approaches: • make a 5 minute POWERPOINT PRESENTATION WITH EMBEDED SOUND NARRATION • make a 3-5 minute VIDEO STORY ABOUT THE PERIODIC TABLE • or make a DIGITAL ANIMATION STORY WITH AUDIO ABOUT THE PERIODIC TABLE. You will present to the class your project and the information you’ve researched regarding the important characteristics of the periodic table. Include as many interesting facts you have learned during your project research. Your project will be used to help future students to study and learn about the Periodic Table! Projects will be accessible to future students from our class website as well as our classroom computers to be downloaded on demand. A. This project may be completed as an INDIVIDUAL D.S. PROJECT or as a TEAM D.S. PROJECT OF UP TO 3 STUDENTS (maximum). B. If you decide to work as a team, the students within each team must comply with the following: i. A maximum of 3 Students per team are allowed and may be in any of your teachers' classes. ii. D.S. teams may only consist of other D.S. students.
Objective(s) 1. Through the use of technology of your choice, you will prepare an instructional / information presentation of how Elements are organized within the Periodic Table. Discussion regarding physical properties of elements as they relate to each Group of elements will be assessed for accuracy. , 2. The common goal is to establish a library of Audio Podcasts and Video casts that will be made available to all future students to download on demand to provide help in specific 8th grade science standards.

Technology Tools Animation Software, Audio Software, Photography (Digital), Moviemaking Software
Procedures - 1. Periodic Table Presentation: • You are to research information pertaining to the Periodic Table and to select and prepare one of the 3 methods of presentation to the class that will be used in conjunction with your research. • Your presentation will be graded on creativity, accuracy of information presented, organization of topics, neatness, clear and understandable speech, cited reference material, and the ability to capture the attention of your audience. , 2. POWERPOINT PRESENTATION WITH EMBEDED AUDIO NARRATION OR VIDEO STORY OF THE PERIODIC TABLE: • Introduce yourself and your presentation topic • Your Powerpoint presentation should run on its own after starting it. o You should have added your audio narration to the Powerpoint slide show in advance. o You should include a summary conclusion that leaves your audience a feeling that they learned from your presentation. • Your Video Story should move smoothly through all topics of the Periodic Table.. o As the “star” of your video, be sure that everything that you show or do can easily be seen and heard. o Your chance to be creative! Use it wisely. , 3. DIGITAL ANIMATION STORY WITH AUDIO • Produce a digital animation story with audio using a free software available from Carnegie Mellon University. This free software may be downloaded from the university website and can be found using the key search word “ALICE”. See your instructor for more information regarding “ALICE” or if would like to use a different software that is more applicable. , 4. MINIMUM INFORMATION TO BE PRESENTED / EXPLAINED IN ANY PRESENTATION METHOD: • Periodic Table vocabulary • Organization of the table • Discussions of each Family • How are elements similar yet change as they go down the “Periods”. • Pictures and examples of elements within each family. • How do the elements within the Periodic Table change as ‘Families’. • Explain physical and chemical properties unique to Families and how they change as you go across the table. • A summary conclusion! • References! Make an effort to go “beyond” the minimum required information! References: • A list of all references must be included. • Standard bibliography form must be used. (refer to Carmenita “Guide to Study, Style, and Research” book.) • No more than one encyclopedia (book or CD-ROM) is allowed as a reference. • The use of an atlas or almanac is encouraged and counts as a reference. • Minimum of 3 references must be used. • The use of our library and Internet resources are encouraged. DO NOT PROCRASTINATE! Have Fun While Learning!
Assessment Project to be assessed upon the complete and accurate information presented regarding all "Groups" within the Periodic Table.
