The Cell Project

Lesson Summary

 

This project helps to reinforce student learning of the parts of the cell (plant and/or animal). It is interactive. Students are required to complete an online quiz for either the plant or the animal or both, and a jigsaw puzzle of either cell or both. Student will email his/her final project to 3 other students in the class. The final activity is to submit to the teacher via email a table created in Office or Google docs with the following information inserted in appropriate columns: name the part of the cell, a brief description, and its image.

 

Objective(s)  1. Students know that all living organisms are composed of cells, from just one to many trillions, whose details usually are visible only through a microscope., 2. Students know the characteristics that distinguish plant cells from animal cells, including chloroplasts and cell walls., 3. Students know the nucleus is the repository for genetic information in plant and animal cells., 4. Students know that mitochondria liberate energy for the work that cells do and that chloroplasts capture sunlight energy for photosynthesis.

CRITICAL THINKING, PROBLEM SOLVING AND DECISION MAKING: critical thinking skills to plan and conduct research, manage projects, solve problems, and make informed decisions using appropriate digital tools and resources.

TECHNOLOGY OPERATIONS AND CONCEPTS: demonstrate creative thinking, construct knowledge, and develop innovative products and processes using technology.

 

Technology Tools Google Docs, Online Quizzes, Word Processing, Email

 

Procedures - 1. The teacher will review the Powerpoint presentation - The Cell" with the class or classes., 2. The teacher will review with students the creating of a table,inserting an image.Students will either use Word or Google Docs. The teacher may review general navigation procedures and citating information., 3. Students will follow the directions given in the presentation and any handout that may be teacher prepared(see attached example)., 4. Teacher will monitor student progress. Project should take about 3 class periods. Students are asked to bring a flash drive to save images and information and final document.
